Maui Meadow Farm in West Chester is a safe place for retired racehorses which helps them find new homes while also rehabilitating injured animals, writes Kim Hudson for CBS Philadelphia

The farm is the place where former racehorses prepare for and get acclimated to life after racing. One such animal is Strong Magic, who recently had to be taken to the University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Veterinary Center in Kennett Square for his knee issues.

Maui Meadow Farm owner Charles Lymon and his wife Nina helped calm the horse during the exam.

The couple said that many owners believe they can make injured or older horses race again, which is when things often go wrong.

“They end up in a bad situation, where they’re not being fed properly, taken care of properly,” said Nina.

Danielle Montgomery, the program coordinator for Turning for Home, the organization that places retired horses for adoption, finds Maui Meadow Farm invaluable to her work.

“They do the rehab,” she said. “And when they do the rehoming, they make sure they keep in contact with the adopters.”
