Collegeville Native Selected by Detroit Tigers on Final Day of 2023 MLB Draft

UConn star David Smith, a Collegeville native and Perkiomen School graduate, got selected on day three of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers, writes the UConn Huskies.

Smith was the team captain at UConn for the 2023 campaign and he was an instrumental part of multiple Huskies teams that broke several records over the past four years.

After earning Second Team All-Big East honors in the previous season, Smith began a postseason to remember. He hit a leadoff home run at No. 15 Maryland in the College Park Regional on June 4 and collected an RBI double and a pair of hits at No. 2 Stanford in Game 1 of Super Regionals six days later.

He crowned his amazing performances by becoming an All-American in 2023. He was awarded to the Second Team by the College Baseball Foundation.

Smith has been rotating between center field and second base. He also played strong defense whenever it was required of him.

During his time at UConn, Smith became only the second player in the history of the program to score 70 runs in a season.
