Yardley Borough and Lower Makefield Township officials have joined the protest against the expansion of Trenton-Mercer Airport over concerns of a negative impact on air, water, and noise quality, writes Greg Vellner for The Reporter.

The FAA has already approved a plan to quadruple the airport’s size and allow the increase of flights by 51 percent to 476,507 take-offs annually by 2035, despite mounting opposition from stakeholders in the area.

Among those who were taking a stand against this expansion was U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, who asked that federal funding for the pact be suspended until a study on environmental effects on nearby Bucks County communities can be completed.

Fitzpatrick penned a letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in which he stated that an expanded Trenton-Mercer Airport could lead to added pollution and asked for an environmental impact study to be conducted.

Yardley Borough Council agreed to support Fitzpatrick’s actions.

“Our communities sit a few miles from the airport, on the other side of the Delaware River, and the expansion will undoubtedly affect our residents,” said Council President Caroline Thompson.
