Pope John Paul II Grad Cutting Back on Social Media Ahead of Her Sophomore Year of College

Royersford native Amelia Kennedy, a Pope John Paul II graduate and point guard on the Catholic University of America basketball team, is working on reducing her social media time ahead of her sophomore year, writes Kathleen Doheny for WebMD.

Currently, Kennedy spends around 7 hours a day and about 9 hours on weekends surfing one of the top five social media platforms (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook). Her goal is to not go over 30 minutes a day, which is the time suggested by several recent studies on the mental health dangers from the overuse of social media.

To achieve her goal, Kennedy plans to start tracking her phone. She is currently working a summer job at a restaurant, so she has to get up early.

“If I have to work, I still go on my phone, but not that long,” she said.

Once she is at work, she only has time to do a quick check in between her work responsibilities rather than getting lost in an endless scroll.

“I definitely am more productive,” she said.
