The Mütter Museum, considered by many to be Philadelphia’s weirdest museum, has housed many medical oddities and arcana for around 160 years, writes Stanley Goldfarb for The Wall Street Journal.

Among the available pieces are a malignant tumor removed from President Grover Cleveland, 139 human skulls, and pieces of Albert Einstein’s brain. Numerous people who suffered from unique conditions have donated their organs to the museum.

However, now some questions are arising about some of the items in its exhibit and whether they have racist or other troublesome connotations. Recently, the museum was accused by activists of not returning the remains of Native Americans to their tribes.

This year, as a reaction to media reports on the issue, College of Physicians CEO Mira Irons and museum executive director Kate Quinn decided to remove all images of human remains from the museum’s online exhibits.

Meanwhile, discussions are currently underway on removing some of the items from the physical collection as the leadership team is worried that it “involves people who are no longer living, and had values that may differ from what people now believe,” as one local report stated.
