Immaculata University is offering a Bachelor of Science in esports and business management starting in fall of 2023. Esports, short for electronic sports, is a type of video game competition with professional players that includes structured, multiplayer video game events that are played either individually or as teams. This new degree program provides students with the opportunity to combine business acumen with specific expertise in esports to gain a foothold in the growing field.

The program focuses on the business side of esports and gaming. Students will gain an understanding of the complexities of the industry and its stakeholders, ranging from gamers to billion-dollar media companies. Students will also learn how to plan and execute esport events, discover how games are created and recognize ways in which gaming content is effectively distributed.

Possible careers in the esports field include player manager, content producer, brand/product manager, market research analyst, marketing manager and event/convention planners. The average salary for an esports manager is $97,500; market researchers earn over $63,000; and marketing managers average nearly $160,000 a year.

Immaculata’s current undergraduate degree in sports and business management lays the foundation for the esports program that includes four esport-specific classes. In addition, an internship exposes students to the real-world working environment within business, esports and gaming administration management. The program is also excellent preparation for Immaculata’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master of Science in strategic leadership.

The field of esports and gaming is a billion-dollar industry with 646 million viewers worldwide in 2023. In the U.S., 60 percent of the population play video games daily. Professionals skilled in business, marketing, distribution, research and sales, along with expertise in esports and gaming, are needed to support this emerging field. According to the May 2023 Market Research Report by Fortune Business Inside, “The global esports market size was valued at USD 1.45 billion in 2022 and is projected to grow from USD 1.72 billion in 2023 to USD 6.75 billion by 2030.”

“The esports and business management degree is a nice complement to our current program portfolio. We are excited to offer our students the opportunity to learn about the developing field of esports. Since this newer area of study maintains the backbone of our business management degree, students will graduate prepared for any business field, with specific concentration in esports. We are excited to watch this program take off,” said Mark McFadden, chair of the Department of Business, Fashion and Leadership at Immaculata University.
