Jenkintown is getting its first Giant supermarket, according to a Diane Adam report for Winsight Grocery Business.

The Giant Co. of Carlisle, Pa., announced its planned expansion recently.

The new Jenkintown site will be its 22nd in-county presence, and the 100 jobs it is projected to create will bring the brand’s in-county workforce to nearly 4,000 residents.

The new location is not replacing a former commercial building, rather, it will be a ground-up build. Once finished, the 50,000 sq. ft. store at the corner of Old York and Wyncote roads is expected to be one component of a larger redevelopment effort.

A construction-date start is yet to be determined, awaiting entitlement and permit filings with the municipality. That pending paperwork has also made an opening date difficult to identify at this early stage.

“With a decades-long history of serving Montgomery County, we are excited to bring Giant to Jenkintown,” said John Ruane, interim president of The Giant Co.

“[We are] looking forward to serving the families of Jenkintown by offering a simplified shopping experience, inspiring fresh ideas and creating a healthier community, true to our purpose of connecting families for a better future,” he continued.
