One Eastern Pennsylvania Waterway Makes State List of Best ‘Swimming Holes,’ and We’ve Got It

Although not in its summer finery yet, the Perkiomen Creek is still picturesque, even in late spring.

It won’t be long before the summer simmer takes hold of Southeast Pennsylvania, leading residents in search of a cool retreat by the water. But as reported by Ashley Adams in The Keystone, that doesn’t necessarily mean a drive to the Jersey Shore.

Adams looked for “swimmin’ hole” adventures statewide and listed the best. Her research yielded high-adventure Pennsylvania possibilities like:

  • A natural water slide in Ohiopyle, south of the midpoint between Johnstown and Pittsburgh
  • Sandy beaches in:
    • Hookstown, north of Pittsburgh by the Ohio border
    • Philipsburg, northwest of State College
  • A trio of waterfalls in Montrose, north of Scranton

These adventures involve something of a trek to access, making them appropriate perhaps for a weekend away for locals.

But one recommendation is in Montgomery County’s backyard.

It’s the Perkiomen Creek, whose east branch crosses into county borders from Berks County near East Greenville and wends its way to the Schuylkill River in Audubon.

The Keystone recommends the Perkiomen Creek for summer activities like kayaking and canoeing.

The full list of Pennsylvania water-based summer fun is at The Keystone.
