When North Penn High School junior Derek Schneider saw that people in his community didn’t have access to food, he decided to take action. That’s how his nonprofit, Food for Friends, was born.

“When I saw this as a problem in our community, I knew that something could be done about it,” said Schneider.

The nonprofit has been gaining traction in the Towamencin community, having already hosted multiple food and clothing drives in the North Penn region, reported Shreeya Patel for The Knight Crier.

The drives are usually at places of worship and around Schneider’s neighborhood.

Volunteers spread the word by placing flyers in people’s mailboxes. The food from the drives is then donated to Manna on Main Street, with the collected clothing going to Goodwill.

According to the nonprofit’s Instagram account, Food for Friends has raised a total of 1,380 pounds of food.

If its success continues, the high school may make it an official club for participation among the entire student body.
