It’s going to be a sweet summer for Lancaster County. Twenty-five cream-of-the-crop shops sprinkled across the county will be participating in the Lancaster County Ice Cream Trail.

The Trail offers a mobile passport for participants to check in at each establishment, with the opportunity to earn points toward select prizes. Rewards include an insulated cooler bag, a mason jar, and a foam cow named Millie.

“It’s a delicious way to explore the county,” says Joel Cliff, the Director of Communications at Discover Lancaster, which is sponsoring the trail. Cliff says that it’s a good way to support local businesses.

“There’s lots of fun different pieces to it,” he says.

One of the participating shops is the Milkhouse Ice Cream Shoppe at Oregon Dairy, which is a farm, supermarket, bakery, country restaurant, buffet, and gift shop outside Lititz, Pennsylvania. The establishment will have periodic specials throughout the summer, specifically to celebrate National Ice Cream Month in July.

Be on the lookout for secret specials, which will be announced on their social media and website. Usually, Oregon Dairy offers buy-one get-one single dip or soft serve ice cream.

The family-run farm structures its business model around “agri-tainment”, offering Farm Tours throughout the second week of June. The shop also has a playground, and a goat pen, ponies, and rabbits.

“It gives everyone a little more of a reason to come out than just get ice cream,” said Jon Hurst, who is the center store manager and a third-generation successor to the family-business.

Oregon Dairy has a unique array of flavors of hand-dipped ice-cream and sundaes, many of which are farm themed. Guests can sip on moo flurries made from old style-milkshake machines or chow down on a Tractor Tire or Whoopie Pie Sundae.

The ice cream is made by a third party which sources the cream from Oregon Dairy, making the shop truly a cow-to-cone establishment.

The mobile trail runs through September 30. Passports are immediately delivered to phones via text and e-mail. No app downloads are necessary.
