A YouTube challenge by nationally known author Natasha Carrizosa (a.k.a. Natty Poet) has invited seventh and eighth graders in Pottstown to take part in a poetry slam.

Carrizosa described the Pottstown Middle School two-day event (Mar. 7–8) by saying, “We’re going to write together; we’re going to vibe together; we’re going to have a good time.”

Her appearance culminates in a 6 PM poetry slam “… starring you, friend. All of y’all.”

A poetry slam, for those unfamiliar, is an energetic forum for verse presented live to an audience. Its “slam” descriptor comes from the crowd’s enthusiastic reactions — sometimes enthusiastic, sometimes less so — of artists’ works.

“Tell your parents, tell your friends to come on out because we’re going to have pizza, we’re going to have poetry, we’re going to have prizes,” Natty Poet described.

Carrizosa’s website cites her backstory in her own words:

“I write my first poem in the fifth grade. I remember running home with it in my hand. I couldn’t wait to tell my momma

“… It has carried me to places all around the world [and] for all these blessings, I am grateful.”

The Natasha Carrizosa poetry slam begins at 6 PM at the school, 600 N. Franklin Street. No admission fee has been cited.

Her complete invitation to middle-school poets in Pottstown is at YouTube.
