Flourtown Jiu-Jitsu Expert Grabs Hold of Statewide Distinction: First Black Dojo Owner-Operator

By

Almost two decades ago, Omar Cruickshank took a free class at the local dojo of a national karate chain. He unexpectedly pinned the black-belt instructor. Eighteen years later, that small victory has grown into his own business, as reported by FOX 29 Philadelphia.

Cruickshank is now owner-operator of Crush Crew Jiu-Jitsu, a role that sets him apart as the first Black owner-operator of this type of fitness entity in the state.

The Flourtown martial artist wasn’t even aware of his distinction.

“A friend hit me up one day during Black History Month,” Cruickshank said. “He said he wanted to do a post on me as the first [Black] jiu-jitsu gym owner in the state.

“I didn’t believe him at first. But then I did my research.”

Cruickshank further discovered that he is the fourth African-American athlete to earn his black belt statewide.

When asked to define Crush Crew Jiu-Jitsu, he answers simply: “It’s family.”

A member confirms that business model. saying, “When I signed up for my membership. Omar gave me a hug and said, ‘Welcome to the family.’”

Crush Crew Jiu-Jitsu offers multiple levels of instruction for members with varying goals.

A “Cubs” program is designed for kids. Other specialties include fundamentals classes for novices and a kick-boxing cardio program.

Cruickshank’s career is a source of pride, but he maintains his modesty.

‘[This business is] a big accomplishment from where I came from,” he said, “[as it is for] the people who came before. And those who will come after me.”

More on Omar Cruickshank is at FOX29 Philadelphia.
