Ben Zauzmer's correct predictions.

Upper Dublin resident Ben Zauzmer has done it again. The Montgomery County numbers-cruncher has used his prodigious analytical skills to accurately predict the outcome of the Academy Awards. Alicia Vitarelli profiled this movie-loving math whiz for 6abc.

Zauzmer is a baseball statistician and assistant general manager for the New York Mets.

But his skill at parsing entertainment industry data has evolved into a full-time career. He’s the official statuette predictor for publications such as The Hollywood Reporter.

He said that he sharpened this particular expertise primarily for the mathematical thrill.

“I think there are perhaps even more close races than a typical year,” he said ahead of 2023’s Oscar Sunday. “In particular, the acting races are thrillingly close. There isn’t really a single one of them where you can say: ‘It’s in the bag.'”

And he was right.

His numbers for this year predicted Austin Butler for Best Actor, “but barely” over Brendan Fraser. Fraser won.

For Best Actress, the math model liked Cate Blanchett most. “But Michelle Yeoh is very much in contention,” Zauzmer hedged. Yeoh won.

Meanwhile, Best Picture was much clearer to Zauzmer. He correctly predicting Everything Everywhere All at Once as the winner.
