A recent state court decision on school funding brought parents, politicians, and educators to Pottstown High School for discussion. Bo Koltnow covered it for WFMZ 69 News.

The gathering sought clarity regarding a Feb. 7 education-finance decision by Commonwealth Court President Judge Renée Cohn Jubelire.

According to the Pennsylvania Capital Star, Jubelire found that the state had deprived students in school districts with low property values and incomes of the same resources and opportunities as children in wealthier ones.

The implications of the opinion — all 800 pages of it — are especially meaningful in Pottstown, identified as the Commonwealth’s fifth most underfunded district.

The Public Interest Law Center, which represented the six school districts suing the state, says an additional $4.6 billion annually will address the inequity.

“For those following the legislature if you think the past two months [have] been exciting, wait until we have to respond to the opinion from this judge,” said State Rep. Napoleon Nelson, whose district includes Montgomery County.

“$4 billion is a problem we don’t have a solution to on either side of the aisle, to be honest with you,” he added.
