The Forbes 2023 assessment of large employers in the Philadelphia region has a few surprises in Montgomery County business community. Ryan Mulligan reported the findings in the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The analysis parsed U.S. companies with more than 5,000 employees. The drill-down location of each firm was determined by the geography of its headquarters.

The highest-ranking employer area-wide is Penn Medicine, whose vast payroll vaulted it to No. 30 in the nation. It is centered in Philadelphia, with major facilities in communities that include West Chester, Radnor, and Lancaster.

Vanguard, in Malvern, earned the No. 51 rank; The University of Pennsylvania was No. 65; SAP, operating in Newtown Square, was No. 80.

The highest of the Montgomery County businesses was No. 86, Swedish furniture manufacturer IKEA. Its North American operations center in Conshohocken.

Noticeably absent from the top 100 was the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which was named America’s top large employer last year.

For 2023, CHOP fell to No. 158.

CHOP further ingrained itself in the Montgomery County healthcare industry with the Jan. 2022 opening of the Middleman Family Pavilion on Goddard Boulevard in King of Prussia.
