A local lawyer is getting national recognition for her immigration advocacy nonprofit. Phoenixville attorney Rachel Rutter founded Project Libertad in 2015, which represents immigrant children for free or at a low cost, writes Karin Mallet for WFMZ 69 News.

She quit her full-time job in 2020 to dive into her work at the nonprofit, and now, Rutter represents over 60 children. The nonprofit was named an honoree of the L’Oreal Paris Women of Worth award. Each honoree gets a $20,000 grant.

The final winner will be selected via popular vote and will receive an additional $25,000. Rutter says that 90 percent of children will be deported if they don’t have a lawyer, which is why the legal service works to keep its fees affordable.

In addition to attorney counsel, the kids also get academic support, access to counseling, and leadership opportunities.
