Law Day is held on or around May 1st every year around the country to celebrate the role of law in our society and to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession. In Montgomery County, our celebration features the swearing-in of new members of the Bar, the presentation of community service awards, and a free luncheon for all attendees at the MBA Building immediately following the ceremony.

And this year, on May 1, we have a very special honoree.

  • Montgomery County District Attorney’s Comfort Dog, “Turks” — a small yellow Labrador Retriever with a big heart and a big story to tell.  Turks will appear in uniform, before a full bench and packed courtroom to receive Montgomery Bar Association’s prestigious Public Service Award during this year’s May 1 Law Day Celebration.
  • Turk’s presence and handlers have had a profound influence on victims and outcomes of major trials since joining the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office in 2014.  Several other deserving service award recipients will also be honored at this year’s Courthouse Law Day Celebration in Montgomery County.

Turk’s handler, Kiersten McDonald, an Investigator in the Detectives Unit of the District Attorney, and three back-up handlers, were trained by Canine Partners for Life of Chester County. Kiersten asserts that, “Turks knows exactly what to do. She understands exactly what  is needed.” Turks is like any other normal pooch– energetic and playful; that is, until the vest goes on! When she is dressed, Turks knows it’s time to work.  Turks is trained in other skills as well – like having the ability to sense a seizure coming on two hours before it occurs.

U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared May 1 to be Law Day in 1958. Law Day is proclaimed to be national day to celebrate law and its contributions to the freedoms Americans enjoy. This year’s luncheon is being sponsored by Penn Community Bank.

The event will be held beginning at 11:30 a.m. today at the Montgomery County Court House, Courtroom A, with a luncheon at the Montgomery Bar Association to follow. If you plan to attend or cover this year’s Law Day event in Courtroom A of the Montgomery County Courthouse and/or the free BBQ lunch that follows, we ask that you kindly register in advance by following this link:  https://www.montgomerybar.org/events/event-details.php?id=9253
