While Center School is busy successfully serving its students who have been diagnosed with language-based learning disabilities, primarily dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it is also supporting the local community and our military personnel who cannot be home for the holidays.

Each year, with the support of the Center School community, toys are collected for the Toys for Tots program. The response at Center School has always been positive, and this year is no different. Toys for Tots is a nationwide charity run by the Marine Corps Reserve that provides toys to less fortunate children in communities around the country at Christmas time.

Mindy Wawrzyniak, Head of School at Center School, holds Toys for Tots close to her heart.

Center School students Eloise O’Rourke, left, and Ni’Airah Porter deliver toys to their local Toys for Tots collection site.

“My husband served in the Marine Corps for 20 years,” she said. “I am pleased to support Toys for Tots and the incredible work they do and thankful to our internal community for their generous toy donations.”

Wawrzyniak is not the only one in Center School with ties to the military. Lower School teacher Alissa Cappelli’s grandfather served in the Marine Corps, and her cousin is currently deployed overseas.

This prompted Cappelli to start a collection for those troops who cannot be home for the holidays. Center School students are collecting items such as toiletries, non-perishable items, books, magazines, and games. Students are also writing personal letters of encouragement and thanks to send along with the collected items. Cappelli welcomes any donations to support her class’s collection drive.

Center School would like to thank all military personnel who are protecting our freedom, especially those who are serving overseas during the holidays. Center School would also like to thank Toys for Tots for bringing cheer to children in the community over the holidays.
