Inspirational Sister of Saint Joseph — Former Teacher and Newspaper Editor — Passes in Flourtown
Sister Kathleen Leary passed earlier this summer at St. Joseph Villa, a Catholic senior living community in Flourtown. Catholic Philly chronicled her life.
Sister Kathleen was 88 but left her mark throughout the Phila. region.
She taught both elementary and high school before joining the staff of The Catholic Standard and Times, the archdiocese’s newspaper, where she stayed 11 years.
Her focus was the youth beat, where she highlighted the achievements of area teenagers.
In 1996, she became a vocations coordinator.
Her view of the area’s youth was consistently upbeat. “I’m absolutely optimistic there are so many good young people out there,” she said. “I encourage them to consider the church. We need them.”
She diligently supported young adults considering a vocational life of religious service. But even her advice about more traditional pathways was compelling: “Work as if everything depends on you, and pray as if everything depends on God. Live life, every golden minute of it, and love life, every God-given second of it.”
