Bryn Mawr’s R. Anderson “Andy” Pew — an executive at Sun Oil, director at the Glenmede Trust Co., and celebrated philanthropist — has died at 85, writes Gary Miles for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The great-grandson of the founder of Sun Oil was a longtime chairman of the grants committee and board member of the Pew Charitable Trusts, an organization that “seeks to improve public policy, inform the public, and invigorate civic life.”

He was a successful businessman who valued philanthropy and volunteering. He was a community activist who worked with House of Umoja in the 1970s, counseling young Philadelphia gang members. He also contributed to numerous organizations throughout the decades.

“One should strive for wealth or power only for what could be constructively done with it,” he said in an interview in 1981. “It is a vehicle, not an end.”’

He served on the board at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, among many others, and was a trustee at Temple University, Bryn Mawr College, and Bryn Mawr Hospital.

A longtime pilot and sailor, he lived in Bryn Mawr with his wife, Daria Decerio.
