George Thompson Pew Jr., of Bryn Mawr, Longtime Director at Glenmede Trust, Dies Aged 79

George Thompson Pew Jr., a longtime director at the Glenmede Trust and great-grandson of the Sun Oil founder, died at his Bryn Mawr home on November 18 aged 79, writes Gary Miles for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Pew was on the boards at the Glenmede Corp. and the Glenmede Trust and served as chairman of the compensation and nominating committees at Glenmede Trust as well as chairman of the Glenmede Fund and Glenmede Portfolios.

Most recently, he was an independent financial consultant.

“He loved to learn,” said his daughter, Alexis Clarke Pew. “And he was knowledgeable about so many things.”

A Bryn Mawr native, George Thompson Pew was also very active in the community. He was also an avid book reader and storyteller of his travels.

He was a board member of the Opera Company of Philadelphia and a committee member of the Devon Horse Show. He served as chair of the Academy of Music Ball as well as president and honorary director of the Philadelphia Charity Ball.

“He always embraced his family,” said his son, George III. “He was a patient person. He helped with problems and shared his wisdom.”
