When This Cheltenham High School Football Star Thanks His Mom Publicly, He Really Means It

The cliché success story usually contains a high-achiever standing amid a gushing public and eager press and saying something on the order of, “I’d like to thank my mom!” But in the case of Kion Wright, star player on the Cheltenham High School football team, that sentiment is no hyperbole. Taryn Hatcher hauled in this mother-son sports collaboration for NBC10.

Star Wright has been helping son Kion achieve on-field success as the defensive line coach at Cheltenham.

“I think it’s unusual to most, but this is a safe haven for me,” said Kion.

Star is no neophyte to the gridiron, either. She’s also a player for Philadelphia Phantomz, a women’s tackle football team playing in the Women’s National Football Conference.

“When I started playing, I’ve always been an elite athlete. I’ve always been good at any sport that I’ve done. So I didn’t want to play football and not be good at it,” she said.

By playing and coaching her son — who has 18 Division I football scholarship offers — Star is becoming a true trailblazer with Xs and Os.

“It’s a once-in-a-blue-moon type of thing,” said Kion. “Me just watching her dominate on the football field, and her coming and watching me dominate on a football field. There’s just nothing like it.”
