Drinking and golf go hand in hand, but many of the most-storied private clubs in America do not simply offer their guests light beer or a hard seltzer, writes Paul Sullivan for The New York Times.

Clubs like Merion Golf Club in Ardmore make sure their guests have access to something unique, in most cases cocktails they cannot get anywhere else.

Merion, which is the host of this year’s Curtis Cup and will host the U.S. Open in 2030, is known for the Pine Valley cocktail. This signature, ice-choked drink is a favorite with members and their guests but it has a somewhat confusing origin.

The drink is the namesake of the world’s top-ranked golf club – Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey. However, some say that the popular drink was first made at Gulph Mills Golf Club, which is an exceedingly private nearby club.
