Plymouth Meeting School Show Purposefully Becomes a Three-Ring Circus

By

Any parent of a child who has performed in a school show knows how quickly a pint-sized production can evolve into a Barnum & Bailey production. But Will Starr, a Plymouth Meeting Friends School teacher, intentionally guides his young thespians in exactly that direction. Todd Haas presented the details in the center ring at 6abc.

Starr was first inspired to create the show based on a circus-themed math book he wrote. Eighteen years later, he’s still at it.

With the help of teacher Audrey Henninger, he guides his kids through a big-top–themed play, changing the story with each edition.

“The two of us — with a lot of guidance and help, really, from the kids — write it,” said Starr.

The play always draws a lot of interest from students, who practice for over a year to be able to do the various stunts required for the show. The unicyclists, in particular, don’t seem to mind devoting outside recess times to honing their riding abilities.

“I think there are a lot of members of the audience that get wowed by their skills,” said Starr. “You see nine-year-olds spinning 20 feet in the air; that’s impressive stuff.”
