Television personality Dr. Mehmet Oz has joined Pennsylvania’s 2022 race for U.S. Senate, writes Katie Meyer for WHYY.

After weeks of rumors about his candidacy, Oz confirmed the news earlier this week in a video he posted on his Twitter account.

“Pennsylvania needs a conservative who will put America first, one who can reignite our divine spark, bravely fight for freedom, and tell it like it is,” said Mehmet Oz. “That’s why I’m running for Senate.”

Oz, who was a New Jersey resident until recently, registered to vote as a Republican in Pennsylvania in early 2020 with his wife, Lisa Lemole Oz.

The couple listed their address as a Bryn Athyn house that is also listed as the residence of Lisa Lemole Oz’s parents.

The address Mehmet Oz included in his statement of candidacy is a medical office and supply store in Huntington Valley that is connected with his wife’s father, Gerald Lemole.

Oz’s own connection to Pennsylvania seems to be slim.

He received an MD and MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine and Penn’s Wharton School, before departing for a residency at Columbia University.
