Viral Facebook Post Brings Rush of New Customers to Historic Lansdale Chocolate Shop

By

A sweet Facebook post made by a Montgomery County man named Steve Colsher encouraging the community to support a local chocolate shop in Lansdale recently went viral, reports Alicia Vitarelli for 6abc.

After Colsher went inside Bergin’s Chocolates, a local, unassuming little shop on Morris Road that has been in the area for 87 years, he posted about his experience on Facebook.

Colsher said that being in the shop took him back in time and the thought of losing a long-standing business made him sad.

“For Valentines or any time, support this family institution,” he wrote in his post.

His post went viral, and people began to show up in droves to Bergin’s Chocolates to buy its small-batch, homemade chocolates and support the business.

Each chocolate here is marked by hand, all in the original kettles and equipment, the exact same way it’s been done since 1935.

“Ordinarily, January is probably our slowest month of the year, and this just went crazy,” said co-owner Michael Snyder. “Between the online ordering and people coming in, it was truly amazing.”

Snyder is the grandson of Bergin’s original chocolatier, and together he runs the shop with another fellow grandson, Joseph Bergin, ensuring the family business is kept alive.

“It makes my heart melt that people care,” Bergin said. “When you have a small business like this, and you depend on the public for your livelihood, it’s just overwhelming. People really do care that much.”

As for Colsher, he’s quite humble about his involvement despite all the good it did for Bergin’s.

“I believe in one small good deed to anybody, any time, any day,” said Colsher. “You never know how it can affect them. If we all do that, we’ll be in a better place.”
