While there were plenty of beloved TV dads before Bob Saget took up his role as Danny Tanner on Full House from 1987 to 1994, Saget’s displays of affection as Tanner put smiles on the faces of a generation of young viewers, writes Yvonne Villarreal for the Los Angeles Times.

“I didn’t know I was being called the biggest geek in the world while it was happening or that I would be revered as the guy who loved hugging,” Saget, who died at 65 last week, told The Times in 2016. “I came up with that. I made him a hugger. That was one of my contributions.”

When it came time to reprise the character on the sequel to the beloved show for Netflix’s Fuller House, Saget couldn’t have been happier.

“Stepping foot back on that set was very personal for me,” he said. “They say you can never come home again, but we got to. It’s a beautiful, wild thing to have walked onto the set. I walked into this house that was a part of my life.”

During his 2016 interview, Saget already knew that his work on Full House had stood the test of time, and he hoped the same would stand true for Fuller House.

“It was part of a culture, part of a generation,” Saget said. “There’s a lot of the anecdotes we’ve heard through the years: ‘You helped raise me’ or ‘I would watch this with my mother or my father.’ I think that the show made a heartfelt impact on people.”

Bon Saget hails from the Abington area and attended Temple University, and passed away last week at the age of 65.
