Phoenixville Area Community Services (PACS), a nonprofit that has been helping people get through difficult or challenging periods in their lives since it was formed in 1972, is celebrating the first anniversary of its new location this month.

Last October, PACS cut the ribbon on its new home at 101 Buchanan Street.

With more than 23,000 square feet, the building provides much-needed space for healthy, nutritious food and helps PACS in its mission to be the lead resource for food insecurity in the community.

The new space enables PACS to support between 12 and 15 other agencies — like churches, senior centers, and other nonprofits — with healthy food for their clients. It’s a network that allows PACS to service as many as 5,000 people each month.

PACS has also been able to expand its food recovery efforts and work with Philabundance’s Grocers Against Hunger and Fiorenza’s Food for Friends. These programs help recover food from local, regional, and national grocery stores and restaurants in order to prevent food waste.

“PACS is a model for community feeding community,” said Mary Fuller, Executive Director of PACS. “That means in addition to serving individuals and their families, we also help other food pantries and meal providers by providing access to additional resources that they may not have. By working together, we can create a more food-secure community.”

Although PACS has completed a lot work on its new home, there is still more to be done.

The organization is in the midst of a campaign to raise the $1.8 million needed to pay off its mortgage and complete its infrastructure needs.

“We need walk-in freezers, elevators, and other electrical work to maximize the use of our space and maintain the safety and freshness of the food we provide,” said Fuller. “Once we pay off our mortgage, we can focus all of our efforts on securing food for our clients.”
