Amid a surge in coronavirus cases fueled by the Delta variant, local companies are split on their approach to a COVID-19 vaccine requirement, writes Erin Arvedlund for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

For example, CompanyVoice in Blue Bell has opted for a hybrid approach.

“We are not requiring employees returning to work to be vaccinated,” said Claudia Timbo, CompanyVoice founder. “However, if they’re not, we require them to wear masks in public areas, similar to restaurants and stores.”

The current workforce shortage is also playing a significant role in the company’s decision.

“It’s very difficult to get qualified workers, due to high unemployment” benefits, she said. “To fulfill our agreements [with clients], we had to go in this direction.”

Meanwhile, Jefferson Health, which has hospitals in Abington and Lansdale and a number of outpatient centers throughout Montgomery County, is taking a more aggressive approach.

“We intend to make vaccines mandatory for all Jefferson employees,” said Brian Hickey, spokesman for the hospital system.

This decision would affect around 35,000 employees, including in Montgomery County facilities. The timing for this mandate is still undetermined.
