Pennsylvania has the second largest number of dairy farms in the country, and one of the best small-scale dairies and creameries is right here in Montgomery County, writes Alexandra Jones for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Merrymead Farm in Lansdale is a fifth-generation dairy that sells its milk to independent grocers and food co-ops throughout the region.
However, the Lansdale farm has also become a hub for many local foods.
Its on-site store features Merrymead’s bottled milk along with products from nearby producers, including baked goods.
The ice cream counter offers some truly unique flavors, including whiskey, lemon cookie, banana peanut butter chip, and my personal favorite- chocolate peanut butter.
Of course, all of the classics are available as well as ice cream cakes when preordered.
And if you stop by during the afternoon, you can take a peek into the milking parlor window to get a glimpse of how it all starts.
In addition to many tasty products, the farm also offers animal visits that will keep everybody entertained.
By visiting a local dairy farm, you can stock up on local cheese, baked goods, jam, local sodas, homemade pasta, milk, and other delicacies while supporting local small family businesses.
