The Philadelphia area is home to many beautiful hiking spots that ensure great head-clearing and soul-cleansing experiences, with some of the best ones located in nearby areas, writes Tonya Russell for Philadelphia magazine.

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is a 1,000-acre wildlife refuge that is interlaced with more than 10 miles of hiking paths to explore. Among these is a 3.5-mile Wetland Loop that provides hikers with the perfect opportunity to spot wildlife.

“John Heinz is one of my favorite places to hike in Philly because of the beautiful scenery,” said avid hiker Jay Shaw III. “The array of beautiful birds, fish, and four-legged creatures are all around you existing in peace.”

Meanwhile, Ridley Creek State Park has 13 miles of hiking trails surrounded by 2,606 acres of woodlands and meadows. The terrain is also easy to navigate, even with a stroller.

As a bonus, hikers can see several historic buildings throughout the park, such as the 1789 stone farmhouse that today serves as the park’s reception center.
