Something Worth Tweeting? Montgomery County Among Ten Best Pennsylvania Sites for Birdwatchers

By

Montgomery County is among the ten best counties in Pennsylvania for birdwatchers, according to eBird, the online database of bird observations.

The site allows bird enthusiasts (and other volunteers) all around the globe to submit data on the birds they see at any location.

Montgomery County ranked ninth in the Keystone State based on the number of species reported of 320. Its three neighboring counties also ranked in the top ten, with Bucks taking the top spot, Delaware placing fourth, and Chester landing in eighth place.

Meanwhile, local birders are among the most prolific in the state, pushing Montgomery County even higher on the list based on the number of checklists. The county ranked second with 133,953 checklists submitted by 4,061 birders.

The top observer based on the number of species is Steven Grunwald at 300, while Andrew Albright submitted the highest number of checklists – a whopping 7,377.

Finally, if you want to ensure you see the most species during your birdwatching excursion, head out to the top county hotspot, Green Lane Reservoir (IBA) – minus the Knight and Deep Creek Lakes.

So far, 277 species have been spotted by avid watchers.
