IKEA, the Swedish home furnishings giant with its U.S. headquarters in Conshohocken, is getting ready to launch a new limited-edition collection, Lokalt, writes Jennifer Marks for the Home Textiles Today.

The collection will debut in June featuring handmade textiles and ceramics created in collaboration with four designers in Amman, Delhi, and Bangkok.

All the Lokalt pieces were made by social businesses in Jordan, Thailand, and India.

Every item is made by skilled artisans and creates work in regions of the world where steady employment can be scarce.

“I looked for designers with a modern expression because I wanted to show that handicraft doesn’t have to look traditional or old-fashioned,” said Maria O’Brian, creative leader at IKEA.

IKEA teamed up with fashion designer Tania Haddad in Amman to create throws and cushion covers depicting street life in the capital city of Jordan. Akanksha Deo, who worked on the collection of rugs and cushion covers, is the lead designer in India.

Meanwhile, Ploypan Theerachai and Decha Archjananun are IKEA’s partners in Thailand. T

hey collaborated on the collection’s bowls, plates, and vases that are made by tribal people in the country’s northern region.
