SEPTA is proposing reallocating around $40 million from the federal economic relief funds on design and engineering work that would move forward the King of Prussia rail project, writes Thomas Fitzgerald for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The transit agency’s board of directors is scheduled to vote later this week on whether the money will be reallocated. The Federal Transit Administration has already approved the move.

The King of Prussia extension has been sought both by SEPTA and regional planners for a long time, as it would link one of the fastest-growing areas in the region with Norristown Transportation Center and the 69th Street Transportation Center in Upper Darby. This would provide connections to Center City.

However some transit advocates worry that such a move would make it harder to preserve the levels of service required to prevent overcrowding on city busses.

“This money is intended to run transit through the crisis,” said Nat Lownes, of the Philly Transit Riders Union.

Meanwhile SEPTA maintains this movement of the funds would not impact services, which are being adjusted as the ridership increases.
