Two Montgomery County truck bottlenecks are among the worst in the United States, according to the annual analysis published by American Transportation Research Institute, writes Michael Tanenbaum for the Philly Voice.

The nonprofit measures congestions that involve trucks at more than 300 highway locations nationwide. It uses GPS data from freight trucks to create congestion impact ratings for each location.

This year’s report shows that the pandemic had little effect on traffic at common bottlenecks and that the impact of the lockdown was mostly limited to a short period last spring.

For example, truck speeds at some bottlenecks improved by close to 100 percent in March, but open roads returned to pre-pandemic levels within two months. Still, some bottlenecks saw overall increases in average speeds during peak travel times, including the local two.

I-76 at U.S. Route 1 in Bala Cynwyd ranked at No. 47 with an average speed of 42.1 mph, which is a 67.4 percent peak average speed increase from last year.

Meanwhile, I-76 at I-476 in Conshohocken ranked at No. 76 with an average speed of 50.9 mph and a 36.6 percent peak average speed increase.
