Maddie Gamburg, an 18-year-old Germantown Academy senior, started the online newspaper The Rocky to help local student writers gain experience with writing and to have something to add to her resume, write Jessica Boyington and Heather Grubola for 6abc.

Gamburg herself has a passion for journalism and writing.

“I just like the writing process and you always have to go through the challenges and bumps,” she said. “It’s kind of like solving a little puzzle or detective case, which is what I love so much about journalism.”

When the pandemic began, she noticed that it was significantly harder for students to find new opportunities in journalism.

“It’s very hard for high school students to get internships at this age because a lot of the employers require you to complete your freshman year of college,” said Gamburg.

So she decided to take matters into her own hands and launched The Rocky. So far, she has recruited students from more than 12 schools in the Philadelphia region.

“Everyone was out of school, so we had a lot of time on our hands and they were excited to have something to do,” she said.
