In the state where every vote mattered, the Philadelphia suburbs played a key role in delivering Pennsylvania to president-elect Joe Biden, write Jonathan Lai and Andrew Seidman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

In Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties Biden grew his total victory margin by almost 105,000 votes over the number Hillary Clinton managed in 2016. This proved to be more than enough to offset the gains made by Donald Trump in the smaller counties statewide, even after a somewhat disappointing performance by Democrats in Philadelphia.

“If Philly didn’t perform up to all expectations for Democrats, the suburbs did,” said Chris Borick, a political science professor at Muhlenberg College. “If you’re looking for one big thing, you’d go to the Philly suburbs. Those margins … were just off the charts.”

Analysis performed by the Inquirer that examined the results in all 238 municipalities in the four counties found that most of them shifted left in the last election, mostly due to turnout surging all across the suburbs.

Additionally the analysis found that presidential votes increased in the suburbs for both Biden and Trump, while third-party candidates saw their number of votes fall significantly.
