Springfield Township Commissioners have signed a letter of support for Pennsylvania’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, writes Betsy Wallace for the Chestnut Hill Local.

Springfield has joined the first group of Montgomery County municipalities that include Ambler, Hatboro, North Wales, Plymouth, Upper Dublin, and Upper Merion which have come out in support of Gov. Wolf’s efforts.

During the Township’s monthly Workshop meeting held on December 7, Joy Bergey, an advocate for clean energy, urged the Commissioners to show their support for the initiative.

She emphasized that RGGI can produce a 21 percent reduction in carbon pollution and create more than 27,000 jobs, according to expert analyses.

The initiative may also produce an injection into the Pennsylvania economy of $1.9 billion as well as $6 billion in health benefits through 2030.

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative is a market-based program to reduce carbon pollution from power plants in a number of Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states. The States currently participating in the program include Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Vermont.
