So far, at least a dozen restaurants and gyms statewide have said they plan to remain open despite the latest shutdown orders issued by Gov. Tom Wolf in response to the surge of coronavirus cases and related hospitalizations across Pennsylvania, write Erin Arvedlund and Anna Orso for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Among them is Universal Athletic Club, a large fitness center in Lancaster. The club posted on Facebook that it has logged close to 200,000 check-ins since June and that there has been no identified community spread related to them.

So far the number of businesses that are willing to oppose the order is small, however the anger is widespread. Some business groups slammed the newest shutdown mandate, including Chester County’s Chamber of Business & Industry.

“Closing businesses that clearly aren’t the cause of a virus spike compounding it by offering no aid is irresponsible and cruel,” said CCCBI president Guy Ciarrocchi. “Our communities will suffer the effects for years.”

The administration has cited two new studies out of Yale University and Stanford University that link restaurants and gyms with new COVID-19 infections when announcing the new orders.
