Chester & Martha Pish of Pottstown, who have been married for 78 years, are the winners of the Longest Married Couple Project for Pennsylvania.

The happy couple that are still going strong, got married on May 23, 1942.

The tenth annual contest is sponsored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter, the original faith-based marriage enrichment program in the United States.

“In this truly unusual time with the pandemic occurring across the United States we are very pleased that over 150 nominations were received and that we have 47 state winners,” said Tony and Sue Morris and Fr. Tom Ogg, the United States Leadership Team for WWME.

The state winners will be recognized and honored during October and November by couples involved with Worldwide Marriage Encounter. The winners are also made members of the Worldwide Marriage Encounter Longest Married Couple Project Alumni group.

The project receives nominations from February to August of each year. This year only one state did not send in any nominations.

The title of the longest-married couple in the country went to Ralph and Dorothy Kohler from Indio, California, whose marriage is in its 85th year.
