Lafayette Hill Executive Who Led Blue Bell-based Driscoll Construction, Dies Aged 87
Michael J. Driscoll, a Lafayette Hill executive who led family-owned, Blue Bell-based Driscoll Construction, died aged 87 on October 1 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, writes Bonnie L. Cook for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The many projects the firm carried out under Driscoll’s tenure included the $67.5 million rebuilding of the South Street Bridge.
“Anybody who drives around this area has seen some of his work,” said his daughter Anita Driscoll Duquette.
Driscoll moved with his parents to Mount Airy in 1944. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Preparatory School before earning a bachelor’s degree in biology from Georgetown University.
He married Peggy O’Neill in 1956 and moved to Willow Grove and Jenkintown to raise their six children.
He was attending Jefferson Medical College when his father, the founder of Driscoll Construction, died suddenly. This caused Driscoll to abruptly change his plans and, with his brother, James, took over the family firm which at the time specialized in tunnel and sewer construction.
They later expanded the company into areas including heavy highway bridge construction.
Driscoll partially retired in 2000, after passing leadership to his son, Michael J. Driscoll Jr.
