Springfield Township High School and Upper Merion Area High School have been named National Banner Unified Champion Schools by the Special Olympics, writes Julia Hatmaker for Penn Live.

The two schools have been recognized for the work they do to ensure they are inclusive when it comes to both sports and leadership activities for all of their students. Only 121 schools across the country have been given this honor.

To become a National Banner Unified Champion School, Springfield Township and Upper Merion Area had to meet 10 standards of excellence.

One of these standards relates to the school being able to offer a fully-inclusive sports or fitness program that includes approximately the same number of students with and without intellectual disabilities.

Additionally, the schools also had to have a minimum of two activities that promote inclusivity and engage the entire school.

In Pennsylvania, eight more schools have been awarded this prestigious recognition, including three schools in neighboring Bucks and Delaware counties.
