St. Joseph’s University Is Preparing Students to Enter Growing Billion-Dollar Esports Industry
St. Joseph’s University is preparing its students to enter a growing billion-dollar esports industry with the launch of its new esports class and club, writes Kennedy Rose for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The program will debut this fall. The goal is to engage the latest generation of students and get them ready for a career in esports.
“It’s pretty clear that this generation is focused on jobs, and we see the careers in this area expanding exponentially,” said Jill Bodensteiner, director of athletics at St. Joseph’s University.
The decision by the university to pursue a program in the industry was cemented by Philadelphia’s position as East Coast’s esports hub. Several local companies are deeply invested in esports, which will make it easier for the university when looking for guest speakers and adjunct professors, as well as future careers for students in esports, said Bodensteiner.
The program will have a class on esports marketing taught by Jim Multari, Comcast’s vice president of compensation strategy and insights. There will also be a club-level esports team, and a facility where students can play and practice.
