Brown’s Super Stores Partners with Local Food Rescue Organizations to Minimize Food Waste
Brown’s Super Stores, with Norristown and Wyncote locations, is aiming to achieve zero waste while putting all the food to good use, writes Arlene Karidis for the Waste 360.
The initiative began years ago as a relatively small food donation project in partnership with local churches and community organizations.
It has since grown into an effort that involves two food rescue organizations collecting any extra food from Brown’s Super Stores throughout the entire week.
Last year the retail chain donated 409 tons of fresh food that was then collected by Philabundance or Philly Food Rescue. The company also donates any non-edible organics which are picked up by a hauler and transported to different locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey for use as animal feed or compost.
Dave Deets, director of Steward Development and Sustainability at Brown’s Super Stores, said that the donation project is an educational process that includes both food rescuers and company management.
“We want our staff to push to donations whenever possible,” said Deets. “It’s about building a culture that gives back to the community, and it starts at the top.”
