King of Prussia-based ReFined Plastics will open its first plastic recycling facility in the United States in neighboring Berks County, writes Lisa Scheid for the Reading Eagle.

ReFined, a five-year-old advanced recycling company, will turn the former Titus Generating Station in Cumru Township into a facility that will take recyclable trash and convert it into plastic pallets.

The resulting pallets would be virgin grade and could be used by a variety of plastic manufacturers. The material for processing would come from household trash.

“This technology is proven at scale and Titus will be the first to use garbage destined for a landfill,” said Joe D’Ascenzo, president and chief technology officer of ReFined. “If it has polymer on it, it can be treated at Titus.”

The process that will be used in the facility has been developed by D’Ascenzo, a Chester County native and Ursinus College graduate, who patented several of its parts.

“Some of the things we are doing are world-changing,” he said.

The project, which is worth around $120 million, is expected to be completed as early as the end of 2022.
