Dating In The Age Of COVID

While dating seem impossible in the midst of a pandemic, things aren’t as bad as we think, as long as we get creative.

Dating, sex, and everything in between have become more complicated with the coronavirus infiltrating everyone’s daily life. A recent article by Tara Parker-Pope of The New York Times outlines New York City’s advice for residents looking to make pandemic dating more intriguing than infuriating.

NYC Health issued “Safer Sex and COVID-19”, a guide for singletons trying to avoid the virus but not each other. The document continues the department’s long tradition of providing sex advice on the forefront of social mores, reports Parker-Pope.

Using masks, video chats, and social distancing to enhance, rather than ruin, intimate experiences are just some ideas in “Safer Sex and COVID-19”. It is unknown if the virus can be transmitted sexually, the document notes, so more traditional safe sex practices still apply.

Grace Dickinson, reporting for The Philadelphia Inquirer, notes awkward conversations about current contacts used to happen before the first sexual encounter. Today, they need to happen before the first in-person meeting.

More than a third of Pennsylvania’s cases are 25 to 49 year olds, The Inquirer article reminds residents. Officials suggest those looking for love take things slowly. Use technology to talk before meeting, or try taking things outdoors.

Know if your potential partner is social distancing, wearing a mask, or in contact with immunocompromised people, says Dickinson. This information can act as a risk-assessment guide for how much contact is safe.

Whatever you do, wash your hands – and keyboard – when you’re done.
