President Donald Trump was scheduled to visit the Braskem factory in Marcus Hook last Friday, but factory officials cancelled because they were worried about health risks, writes Carol D. Leonnig for the Washington Post.

Workers lived at the factory for 28 days so the coronavirus would not contaminate their production work.

President Trump planned to appear with the workers to thank them for turning out PPE gear.

But factory officials worried a Trump visit could jeopardize the safety of the workers and the ability to produce special material for masks and medical gear.

“We were deeply honored by the White House’s acknowledgment of our production resiliency teams,” Braskem CEO Mark Nikolich said. “However, after many discussions, the parties agreed due to the nature of petrochemical operations and the safety of our team members and visitors a visit wasn’t feasible.”

Trump and Vice President Pence have appeared at public events to showcase how the administration is fighting the health crisis. Some health experts say the visits create heightened health risk.

Trump has not worn a mask in public, and Pence has only occasionally done so.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said Trump has made safety his top concern.
