Harcum College’s ‘Art & Design Experience’ Offers Immersive Workshops for Prospective Students

By

The popular Sumi Ink Painting Workshop will once again be offered at the Art & Design Experience at Harcum College.

An immersive event for prospective students called the “Art & Design Experience” will offer hands-on workshops in all the Art & Design degree programs at Harcum College.

It will be held on Saturday, April 4 from 8:30-11:30 AM at Harcum’s Art & Design Center, located at 270 South Bryn Mawr Avenue. The event is open to anyone considering a degree program in an art or design field who is 16 years or older.

Sessions will be taught by professional graphic artists and illustrators, fashion and interior designers, and photographers. The experience offers a chance to learn about new techniques, trends, and equipment.

Registrants can select one workshop experience from these majors: Art & Design, Fashion, Graphic Design, Interior Design, or Photography.

Art & Design: Sumi Ink Landscape Painting

Paint scenes from nature surrounding the Art & Design Center using Sumi ink (black ink painting) techniques, including brush and pen, where the emphasis is placed on the beauty of each individual brush stroke.

Fashion Design & Merchandising: Shibori Workshop

Shibori is a traditional Japanese form of dyeing that revolves around different ways of binding and folding fabric to create different patterns and is most commonly practiced with indigo dye. Attendees will experiment with muslin, using stitching, tying, and folding techniques to create a variety of markings, then will proceed to create a shibori scarf to take home.

Graphic Design: Stencils, Typography, and Button-Making

This will be a series of mini-workshops using hand-cut stencils on sketchbooks, designing and making buttons and pins, and experimenting with metal type and letterpress printing techniques. The stenciled sketch book will be yours to take with you.

Interior Design: Building a Terrarium

Interior Designers are always finding inspiration in nature and will host a Terrarium-Building workshop. These self-contained, small-scale ecosystems bring health, peace, inspiration, and the joy of nature to the indoors. Attendees will create their own unique indoor container garden.

Photography: Fashion Photography Commercial Shoot

Learn specific photographic techniques for fashion photography, which demands that the clothing and/or accessories are showcased accurately while preserving the model’s special appeal/edge. You will use a five-step process: compose the subject, prepare equipment, prepare the product, adjust the camera, and edit the image.

The following is the schedule for the Art & Design Experience:
