The fate of Jenkintown-based Empire Covers hinges on whether its manufacturing plant in Kentucky will be allowed to continue working under Governor Andy Beshear-mandated closures of all non-life-sustaining businesses, writes Jeff Blumenthal for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Jake Goldblum, owner of the e-commerce business that sells covers for vehicles, patios, and furniture, has applied for a waiver from the order in the hopes that its 30 employees can continue producing covers.

“It is a scary time,” said Goldblum.

He added that if his plant is shut down, he would immediately have to reduce payroll to around 20 percent and maybe lay people off.

“I would expect within three to six months we would be in real trouble because we would have no cash flow,” he said. “If we can’t ship our products to our customers, then we go out of business.”

But while the company waits for a decision on its waiver request, the staff at its plant has been reduced to a skeleton crew that are using the available materials to make surgical masks it sells for a discounted price.
