Sugar was an expensive good in the colonial era, and the sweet candies made with sugar were a true treat. Discover recipes for candied citrus fruits and almond cremes, or try your hand to assist the historic cooks in the reproduction kitchen. Learn about how candies, such as comfits, were made in the 18th century and see if you can keep track of just how much sugar was used to create all these marvelous sweets! Assist the cooks to create the eye-catching displays and sugar paste boxes that colonial party guests could use to take some of these candies home. Bring a recipe for history to your Valentine’s Day at Pottsgrove Manor!

In this lecture, Ana Lucia Araujo shows how current debates about slavery are more than simple attempts to come to terms with the past but are rather associated with persistent racism and racial inequalities which prevail in former slave societies or countries where slavery existed.

Currently Araujo is a professor of history at Howard University. She is a social and cultural historian whose work explores the history and the memory of the Atlantic slave trade and slavery and their social and cultural legacies.

As part of the 2020 program, Voices of Hope continues its tradition of honoring influential Philadelphians, with a new focus on honoring innovators in the health and wellness field. Mutale Nkonde is an AI policy analyst and researcher based in New York City. She is founding executive director of AI for the People (AIFTP) a nonprofit organization that uses popular culture to educate black communities about the civil rights implications of the integration of AI systems into public life.

Nkonde also worked in AI governance and was part of the team that introduced the Algorithmic and Deep Fakes Algorithmic Acts, as well as the No Biometric Barriers in Housing Act. She is currently a fellow at the Berkman Klein Center of Internet and Society at Harvard University.

February 9 – Ardmore Music Hall

Active on and off since the early ’70s, long-running progressive rock group Crack the Sky built a loyal following in the Baltimore area that stuck with them as they rode the tides of the music industry over the next several decades. Characterized by tightly wound playing, quickly shifting song structures, and high-concept lyrics from vocalist John Palumbo, the band’s early albums on the Lifesong label approached hard rock with complex technical prowess. The band would break up and reunite frequently over the years, with different phases of activity resulting in albums like 1978’s Safety in Numbers, 2004’s Dog from Japan, and a plethora of live albums and compilations.

Karl Denson is an American funk and jazz saxophonist, flutist and vocalist from Santa Ana, California. He was a member of Lenny Kravitz’s band and has co-founded and led The Greyboy Allstars.

Though they were not the first to synthesize jazz and hip-hop, Digable Planets epitomized the laid-back charm of jazz hipsters better than any group before or since. The trio’s 1993 debut album, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), was a mellow ride packed with samples from Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, and Curtis Mayfield, and the single “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” became a Top 20 pop hit. After earning a Grammy for Best New Duo or Group and embarking on an ambitious tour that included several live musicians, the Planets returned in late 1994 with their best album yet. Blowout Comb continued the group’s jazz-rap fusion, but also saw them branching out to embrace the old school sound of the street as well.

January 15 – February 9 – People’s Light

Hazel and Robin, both retired nuclear physicists, live a quiet life in a cottage by the sea. Outside, the world is plagued by earthquakes, tsunamis, and a nuclear meltdown. When an old colleague turns up after forty years with a shocking request, the three friends must reckon with their shared culpability in this darkly funny disaster drama.

Recommended for ages 13+ due to mature themes and profanity. Approximate run time is 1 hour and 40 minutes with no intermission.

February 1 – 15 – DCP Theatre

In a small village in Yorkshire, a group of women volunteers at the local hospital decide to raise money to purchase a new settee for the hospital waiting room. Their grand scheme involves creating a calendar using photographs of the women auxiliary members in various states of déshabillé. Based upon a true story, the calendar becomes the hottest news story in England, complete with the news media descending upon the village.

To celebrate the spirit of Calendar Girls, DCP Theatre has produced its own version titled “The Women of DCP Theatre.” The limited-edition calendar features DCP Theatre volunteers with each month depicting a different theatre production activity. Originally from Fairview, New Jersey, for the first 48 years she was better known as comedian Rick Scotti. She toured the country, appearing at venues all over the United States and Canada, both as a headliner in comedy clubs and as an opening act for artists such as Lou Rawls, Chicago, and Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Julia has appeared on numerous television and radio shows as well as commercials.

Born and Raised in Delaware, Keith Purnell has been entertaining crowds and audiences in Comedy Clubs and Venues for over 15 years. His love of Arts and Entertainment has helped him appeared on Fox TV, MTV, B.E.T, and Sirius Radio. His passion for Comedy is evident in every performance as he goes full steam from the time he starts until he leaves the stage. His quick wit, style, and enjoyable crowd work makes him a hit at any Comedy Club or Venue. He is slowly taking the Comedy World by storm….So Get Ready…He’s coming…..and He’s Armed with Laffs!!!
